PostSubject: PKNA's success versus beer consumption in Europe   Sat Sep 15, 2012 4:15 pm

So I wondered whether there is a relation between PKNA's success in any given European country and its beer consumption per capita.

First, I divided the countries into those where the series was successful and those where it wasn't:

Not Successful:
Netherlands
Germany
Finland

Successful:
Denmark
Norway
Sweden
Italy

I relied on an article in this German magazine (page 34) to determine where it was successful and where it wasn't:
http://www.bertel-express.de/index.php?page=be-magazin-26

Then I compared their beer consumption per capita (in litres):

Netherlands: 74
Germany: 107
Finland: 83

Denmark: 67
Norway: 52
Sweden: 52
Italy: 28

These numbers (except for Italy) are from 2010, taken from Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_beer_consumption_per_capita

Since Italy wasn't included in that list, I used the value from 2009, taken fom this PDF (page 12):
http://www.brauer-bund.de/download/Archiv/PDF/statistiken/101126%20The%20Brewers%20of%20Europe%20-%20Beer%20Statistics%202010.pdf

This may be just coincidence, but I find it interesting how all those nations that embraced the series have lower beer consumption than the others. The best thing is that PKNA's country of origin has by far the lowest number. (But they really do love wine!)

One thing to note is that Denmark's beer consumption has massively decreased in the last ten years, as can be seen in the PDF above, where it says that the average Dane consumed 96 litres in 2003, which is more than Finland and the Netherlands. In 2002, it was even 98 litres according to this site: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/foo_bee_con-food-beer-consumption
This is a 32% decrease between 2002 and 2010. I guess PKNA had a positive effect on Denmark's children.

ROFL! Laughing

I like to think that if they tried again now, PKNA might be much more succesful in Finland. With the coming of manga and anime, a much larger portion of Finns now realises that comics aren't always just for children and that comics aimed older audience isn't a bad thing. But I'm still ashamed at the lack of good taste among my people that the results show. Sad

So the conclusion is that only sober people read PKNA, I'll buy that.

Wasn't Don Rosa proof enough for you Finns that duck comics isn't necessarily only for kids?

But perhaps it was more related to the much more action-oriented style of PKNA...

Or beer, I'd accept that too

You, sir, have too much free time...

Meh, I drink much, much more beer than the quota and I have read the series since it first came out in the 90s. Then again, I was only 8 years back then and therefore sober... most of the time anyways... Rolling Eyes

Well, Rosa is definitely extremely popular here, but as brilliant as he is, his stories still aren't quite as... 'unsuitable' for little kids as PKNA. They're more for all ages, while PKNA is for teenagers and young adults, I'd say.

I'm totally sober and I hate alcool. THAT'S WHY I TOTALLY LOVE PKNA LOL?

I tried a beer once. I shoved it in the face of the one who gave it to me.

I'm so a diehard fan.

Time to show them some Furry- and/or Hentai-Porn then. There are more than enough talking animals not for children. Rolling Eyes

Or, a more serious example, Watership Down... or Felidae.

I guess I'm getting a little off-topic...

True, except for The Prisoner of White Agony Creek. Not even PKNA dares pull such Freudian jokes or come any close to the cabin scene in the end.

I guess I'm not helping keeping the thread away from furry discussions and the like, right?

Hi to everyone, aside from thanking you for your job with PK's translations, I add myself in the group:

a fan for both traditional Duck Avenger (Martina-style) and PKNA, I'm a no-alcol believer (wine, beer, strong drinks...)

P.s. sorry for my terrible english.
